Modern Apprenticeship Facts

What is a Modern Apprenticeship?
Modern Apprenticeships offer those aged over 16 paid employment, combined with the opportunity to train for jobs at craft, technician and management level. They are available across a wide range of industries. The content of each apprenticeship programme is contained in a framework document. Framework documents are approved for use in Scotland by the Modern Apprenticeship Group. You can find information on MAG and latest news about MAG activities at: http://www.ssascot.org.uk/web/site/mod_apprent/mod_apprent.asp

How are Modern Apprenticeships developed?
Modern Apprenticeships are designed by employers because employers are best placed to know the skills and attributes required in their employees. Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) are responsible for developing MA frameworks by consulting the employers in their sector.
You can find out more about Sector Skills Councils at: http://www.ssda.org.uk/

What does a Modern Apprenticeship involve?
All Modern Apprenticeships must have certain common features:

  • Apprentices achieve a Scottish/National Vocational Qualification (S/NVQ) at level 3.

  • The 5 Scottish core skills (Communication, Numeracy, IT, Problem Solving and Working with Others) must be included.

  • All apprentices must be employed throughout the apprenticeship.

  • Apprenticeships are achieved at the pace and within the timescale appropriate to the employer and apprentice. There is no element of "timeserving".

  • Successful apprentices receive a certificate of completion from the Sector Skills Council.

How are Modern Apprenticeships delivered and funded?
Modern Apprenticeships are delivered by colleges, training providers or employers’ own training departments. Details of colleges and training providers for each framework are available from the relevant SSC.
Skillseekers funding is available as a contribution towards the training costs for eligible apprentices. You can find more information on Skillseekers funding from your Local Enterprise Company at:
